Shutting the stable door after the horses was bolted.

Image
Over the past few week and I am sure in to the next few month the scandal that we have been sold horse meat instead of beef will run and run. Now unlike in the past when something has gone wrong or that people lives have been put into danger this is nothing like that. This is about money, pure simple money, but no one will admit that. For years the big supermarkets have grown to such a size that they can dictate the price of what they buy.  If you are a farmer and you grow potatoes you have to sell them, now you can do that in a small-scale way at the famer market or to local shops. But most of the time you will be lucky to cover your over heads. Small scale is good if you want to know where it comes from but if you want to supply a larger market then you, you have to go to the supermarkets and then you have to sell at the price that they want to buy at.  And if you want £1 a kilo and they want to pay £0.80 then you have a choice sell a few or sell it for less and...

20% Of Schools Do Know Where Their Food Comes From, Thanks To The Soil Association's Food For Life Catering Mark

Image
The horsemeat scandal has exposed two major flaws in our food system: too little traceability and too much processed food. Too few of us now know where our food comes from, and when it comes to food in our schools and hospitals, we cannot even check the label. This is why the Soil Association has taken up the challenge of transforming catering across the UK.  The Soil Association's Food for Life Catering Mark is the UK's only independent accreditation scheme setting standards of traceability, quality and provenance for public sector meals and inspecting caterers to ensure that standards are met. The scheme accredits over 650,000 meals a day, including food in 20% of schools in England and the UK's largest chain of nurseries. The Catering Mark logo can also be found guaranteeing standards in workplaces, universities, visitor attractions and restaurants. At bronze (the entry level) all meat served fulfils the requirements for UK Assured Food Standards (AFS) o...

Sous Le Nez Revamps Wine List Introducing More Choice And Better Value

Image
One of Leeds' most renowned restaurants has given its wine list a major overhaul in order to make it more accessible and provide a better value offering for diners. Sous Le Nez, on Quebec Street, has created a new 'under £30' category and added 40 new wines at this price point. The restaurant now offers a total of 64 different wines under £30, with 30 of those being under £25. The long-established brasserie boasts one of West Yorkshire's most extensive wine lists and carries more than 350 labels from all over the world. Prices range from £3.15 for a glass for good quality house wine to several thousand pounds for a vintage wine. Sous le Nez has made the changes to offer diners more variety at economising prices and to encourage more people to experience a wider range of wines, which they may normally associate with a higher cost. The presentation of the Wine List Menu has also been changed with a section dedicated to wines 'under £30...
