Food And Travel Awards 2013

The great and good of the worlds of gastronomy and travel gathered in London last night for the Food and Travel magazine Reader Awards, held at The Savoy hotel.

Among the big winners on the night was Angela Hartnett MBE, named Chef of the Year. The culinary power behind Murano and Lime Wood was also honoured with head chef Luke Holder for her newest venture, Hartnett Holder & Co, in Hampshire, which scooped the Newcomer of the Year award in the restaurant category.

It was also a big night for the South West, and in particular Cornwall. Two-room B&B Salthouse, in St Ives, was named Bed and Breakfast of the Year, while Rick Stein's The Seafood Restaurant in Padstow took the Timeless Classic restaurant gong. His protegé Nathan Outlaw went away with the Book of the Year accolade for his work on British Seafood.

London's vibrant 12 months was reflected in a patriotic vote that saw the British capital claim the City of the Year title, while Peru's growing popularity as both a food and travel hotspot led to it being named Destination of the Year.

The awards were voted for entirely by readers of the magazine over a three-month period - with the exception of the Breakthrough Chef of the Year award, for which a specialist panel convened to honour Tom Sellers of Restaurant Story.

The awards ceremony was hosted by comedian Lucy Porter with guests treated to food cooked by chefs José Pizarro (of José and Pizarro, in London); Tom Kerridge (The Hand & Flowers, Buckinghamshire); and Michael Caines MBE (Gidleigh Park, Devon).

Food and Travel is an independent, upscale lifestyle title published 10 times a year and available for £3.95 at Sainsbury's, Waitrose, WHSmith and other quality retailers.
