The good food guide bans the tern Gastro pub

A welcome bit of news, in my opinion.  It has for a long time now not just with the name gastro pub but lose fitting cover all names that people award there businesses that mean very little to any one but say to much about what might actually be. To me the term Gastro pub is a name that came about when chefs who wanted to take the food that they make to the people how can not afford or want to go to restaurants that have all linen and wall to wall waiters.  It is the classic surroundings of a pub with the fine dining food of a good restaurant. The only problem with that is you end up with a pub that becomes a restaurant, and the owner charges five to ten pounds more a head calling it a gastro pub.  It is as I have often said to people call a French bread pizza a brochette and you can charge more money. Just because you call your self, a Gastro pub does not mean you are.

It is like the much abused term award winning. What award and when did you win. I know of hotel that boost awards that no longer apply as they won them over ten years ago and the staff who won the award have gone and the whole market has moved on. However, as they have one once a long time ago they consider them selves an award winning business. I knew a chef who won a local newspaper competition best dessert, and after that, he was plugged as an award-wining chef. I remember witnessing his so-called superior shellfish sauce that was one tin of Baxter’s lobster bisque, some cream and white wine boiled together.

But the term gastro pub I feel is a title that does not mean any thing. A piece of P.R. spin that was used to describe a pub that did food that was of a fine dinning quality. Not just a pub with a room that we now call the restaurant and a chef with a squeeze bottle full of dressing and a microwave premade lasagne. Not that there is any thing wrong in this but it is if you use the term “gastro pub”.

Pubs have had to move from being pubs to do more food and that is the way of things, and many of them do it well. But just because you are a pub that does food does not mean your are a gastro pub. If you are wondering what is a gastro pub then have a look at this article on this link . I think it cover it better than me.
