Chinese New Year Food
Well it is safe to say that I do not really know that much
about Chinese food and its symbolic meaning. In fact I would never be so brave
as to even try to but I have gleamed some things that you could use if you was
wanting to have a special dinner to celebrate the Chinese new year, the year of
the dragon.
Food has a very special importance in Chinese culture so it
plays a really big roll in the new years celebrations. And the thing you are looking for is lucky
food so you will have luck for the year. Lucky foods are served all though the
fortnight New Year calibration, or spring festival.
So what gives a certain food symbolic significance more than
others do? Sometimes it is its appearance,
or it may have special significance during Chinese New Year.
A whole chicken served during the Chinese New Year
symbolizes family togetherness, noodles a long life, clams, and spring rolls
wealth. However, what is interesting is
that it is consider unlucky to cut the noodles. So who would not want family
togetherness, long life and wealth.
Some of the food is special for the way its sounds, tangerines,
and oranges are given out as they sound like the word luck and wealth. Also there is the pomelos, a large kind of
grapefruit, pomelo sounds like the word
for to have. The Cantonese for lettuce
sounds like rising fortune, lettuce is often in a wrap with other lucky food.
But the big thing to have as far as I can tell is also some
fish. The word for fish, "Yu," sounds like wish and abundance. According to my research, and I do apologise
if this is wrong but you serve the fish at the end of the meal. The fish should be served whole with the head
and tail still attached. This way you
can have a good end at the beginning and the end of the year.
As for some thing sweet, you have steamed cakes and sticky
rice cake. The sweetness is symbolic of
a sweet rich life. Also the round shape
signifies family reunion.
Now I do not know how all this really affects the coming
year but I have always felt some things can not be explained and if by doing
just a few of these thing you are thinking like that then you might try and act
more like what you are whishing for .
So why not bare this in mind if you are going to celebrate
the new year of the Dragon.
