Summer Holiday Fun for Brave Youngsters

TWO West London venues are working together to help children who've overcome difficult challenges to learn new skills.

Leiths School of Food and Wine has joined forces with Kite Studios, a creative space founded by local artist Auriol Herford, to offer four sponsored places on their Kids' Kitchen summer course.

These places have been awarded to four local children who have overcome some very difficult obstacles.

On Thursday, the children will join others on the course and spend the morning learning to cook an American style brunch. Featuring a home made chicken burger with sweet purple slaw and baked sweet potato wedges, this might look like fast food, but it is secretly healthy! For pudding, they'll prepare fruit skewers with a chocolate dipping sauce.

In the afternoon they'll head to Kite Studios where they will indulge their imagination, using clay and mixed media to create dreamlike food sculptures, taking inspiration from the work of artist Claes Oldenburg.

Friday will be a completely different experience, as the children learn to use an etching machine, taking home original prints on special Fabriano paper, inspired by the food theme of an Asian Banquet.

Their final afternoon will be spent back in the kitchen, learning to bake for picnics. They'll make their own mini pies, choosing from ingredients like chicken, cheese, ham, spring onions and sweetcorn. They'll then bake crumbly apple, raspberry and strawberry biscuits.

Mother-of-two Lise, whose son was chosen to receive a complimentary place, said: “The news has made my son so happy and excited!

“He had an operation in January after his appendix ruptured, and he nearly died. He gets very anxious and suffers from post traumatic stress disorder.

“Being able to go off and absorb himself in these activities, with his big brother nearby for support, will help his confidence no end.

“He used to eat everything and anything before the operation, now he's become so picky and doesn't enjoy food like he used to.

“He always wanted to help in the kitchen, so fingers crossed he will find his spark again at Leiths.”

Jenny Stringer, deputy managing director at Leiths, said: “In our experience children love to cook. It's fun to do, and they get to eat something tasty at the end.

“Fussy eaters are far more likely to eat something they've made themselves, and the kitchen skills children learn enable them to eat well throughout their lives.”

Auriol Herford, founder of Kite Studios, said: “We're very pleased to be able to offer Kids' Kitchen places to children who might not otherwise have the opportunity to attend.

“We've found the combination of art and cookery is an invaluable experience for the children involved.”
