Brown Cow Organics Awarded Good Dairy Award 2013 In Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards
Brown Cow Organics are delighted to announce they have been
awarded the first Good Dairy Award in the 2013 Good Farm Animal Welfare Awards
by Compassion in World Farming; recognition indeed of their commitment to farm
animal welfare. Compassion's Good Dairy
Award launched in 2011 - celebrates and recognises companies that are committed
to using higher welfare dairy systems for cows and calves.
Tracey Jones, Director of Food Business at Compassion in
World Farming said, "It's wonderful to see Brown Cow Organics take animal
welfare so seriously as part of their herd and food produce ethos. Higher
welfare produce isn't just the responsibility of the large corporations, but
something that can be achieved at all levels. Well done Brown Cow Organics-
keep up the good work!"
Brown Cow Organics Guernsey herd graze only the nutritious
grass of their 480 acre organic land for nine months of the year; the land is
continually analysed to maintain and consistently build nutritional soil
structure and fertility; aiming for a balance of minerals, trace elements and
bacterial (the good stuff) activity.
In the worst winter months (usually December to February)
the herds are snug in their winter quarters and fed daily on silage cut on the
Brown Cow Organics farm in May and whole crop silage grown and cut on their
farm in July. The crops and grass grown
from their rich soils are constantly analysed and interpreted to formulate an
organic diet that further enhances the health of their cows using only
certified organic products. Their Guernsey cows
during their two month dry period prior to giving birth are fed their
own straw, silage and their own home grown non - soya protein (from spring
beans); they do not source or utilise soya, unlike many other organic farmers.
Owner of Brown Cow Organics Judith Freane said on winning
the award "We are thrilled that our determination to keep animal welfare
as a priority in everything we do and all the food we produce has been
acknowledged with this award from Compassion in World Farming. You have to make
some very tough decisions as a farmer nevertheless husband Clive and I have
always been resolute that animal welfare was critical in everything we do and
this award clearly demonstrates to and reassures our customers that we
uncompromisingly pursue high welfare standards."
It's a been a marvellous year of recognition for Brown Cow
Organics, during their annual Soil
Association assessment this year the inspector commented to Judith "The
animal welfare standard on this farm is excellent and the best I have ever seen
in my fifteen years as a Soil Association Inspector."
Brown Cow Organics won its first industry award in 2001 and
hasn't stopped winning them since; just last month their Dark Cherry yoghurt
won a Great Taste Gold Award and announced only last week they are winners of
the Gold Organic Food Award and Dairy
Category Winner for their Live Organic Natural Yoghurt.
