Fun On Tap, At Beer And Cider Festivals

Lovers of craft ales and ciders are expected to flock to two festivals being held in the North East next month.

Over two weekends in August, customers at The Runhead Bar and Grill, Holburn Lane, Ryton and the Sandpiper, Farringdon Road, Cullercoats, will be able to sample a wide range of real ales and ciders from the region's finest craft breweries.

The Runhead Beer and Cider Festival will take place from Friday 15 to Sunday 17 August while the Sandpiper Festival will be held on Saturday 30 and Sunday 31 and

Newcastle-based Malhotra Group, which owns the venues, hopes they will become annual events.

The Group has joined forces with Wylam and Cullercoats breweries; Firebrick Brewery, at Blaydon; Anarchy Brew Co, Morpeth and Matfen-based High House Farm Brewery, each of which will be showcasing three ales at each festival.

There will also be the opportunity to try five ciders at the Runhead festival and three at the Sandpiper event with each festival also offering food and family entertainment.

The Runhead will be offering barbecues on Friday 15 and Saturday 16 and children's entertainment on Sunday 17, while the Sandpiper will have a bouncy castle and face painter on Saturday 30 followed by a barbecue from 4pm to 9pm.

On Sunday 31, there will be a magician along with a carvery from noon until 4pm, free curry from 6pm to 9pm and live entertainment throughout the evening.

Along with The Runhead and Sandpiper, Newcastle-based Malhotra Group owns and manages Scalini's restaurants at Jesmond and Gosforth; the Three Mile Inn, also Gosforth; Osbornes at Jesmond and Market Lane in the city centre.

“There has been a noticeable increase in the popularity of real ales and craft ciders across our venues,” said Atul Malhotra, director of The Malhotra Group, “and we are very keen to embrace this.

“The region has some superb, independent breweries and we very much hope these two festivals – which will be great fun for all the family – will mark the start of fruitful and ongoing relationships with them.”
