The Pearl in the Cornish Foodie Calendar: Falmouth Oyster Festival 2014

Falmouth’s Events Square will again play host to one of Cornwall’s biggest and best loved specialist food festivals, Falmouth Oyster Festival, from Thursday October 9 – Sunday October 12.

The annual festivities celebrate the start of the oyster dredging season and the diversity of Cornish seafood, with four days of feasting, cooking demos, live music and craft stalls. The last remaining traditional fishery in Europe, the Port of Truro Oyster Fishery is the only one still to be fished using the traditional methods of sail power and hand-pulled dredges.

Katy Davidson, The Oyster Lady will help kick start the event with a cookery masterclass as part of the Grand Opening Bash. Demoing for his very first year will be Michelin starred Cornish chef Chris Eden, alongside TV personalities James Strawbridge of ITV’s Hungry Sailors and Thom Hunt of 3 Hungry Boys and 7th Rise.

Over 38,000 visitors to the festival, now in its 18th year, flock to the festival marquee to sample seafood and sup champagne, with the whole family able to enjoy Cornish produce from the many stalls inside and surrounding the festival marquee.

A key date in the foodie calendar, cooking enthusiasts can enjoy demos from leading local chefs, a gourmet night at St Michaels Hotel & Spa and oyster shucking competitions. The fun-filled event celebrating all things maritime will be set to a soundtrack of live music and sea shanties sung with gusto, best enjoyed with a pint of local ale and, naturally, a freshly shucked oyster.
