Greek Street-Food Outlet, 21 Bateman Street, Opens In Soho
21 Bateman
Street, offering a menu of quality Greek streetfoods, with an emphasis on
souvlaki, has just opened in the heart of Soho. This delicious, healthy way to
enjoy food on the go is prepared over a robata-style grill, and can be enjoyed
eating in or taken away. More information, and a full menu, can be found at
www.21batemanstreet.co.uk
Souvlaki -
which simply means 'skewer' or 'stick' - are freshly made daily on the
premises, and cooked over charcoal. Pork, lamb, chicken or vegetarian (tomato,
mastelo cheese, pepper, onion and mushroom) souvlaki can be served simply on
their own, or wrapped in authentic Greek flatbread with tzatziki, mint yoghurt
or mustard sauce.
Other
starters and sharing dishes range from pitta bread and Kalamata olives to baked
feta or wild boar sausage, with more substantial options including a three meat
burger (also available stuffed with feta) and a daily special. To finish, as in
Greece, there's yoghurt with a selection of toppings of the day, such as honey
and home made stewed fruits.
To suit the
casual surroundings, the drinks list is short, with two red and two white Greek
wines (priced from £4.20), and Fix beer (brewed in Greece). Greek tea is
available, alongside coffee.
The
café-style dining area is small, with 22 seats at tables and benches.
Reservations can be made for groups of six or more. Plans are in hand to launch
a Greek music night on Tuesday evenings, with a live band.
21 Bateman
Street has been opened by a group of friends from Greece who have been living
in London and identified a lack of Greek options in the burgeoning casual
dining scene.
21 Bateman
Street is open daily from midday, until midnight Sunday - Thursday, and until
1am on Fridays and Saturdays.
