Jeremy’s Restaurant dishes up winning Sussex Young Chef of the Year 2012/13

It was a case of near tragedy producing triumph when young chef Jimmy Gray of Jeremy’s Restaurant, Haywards Heath, West Sussex won the prestigious Sussex Young Chef of the Year 2012/13 at an awards ceremony held last night at the Amex Stadium, Falmer, Brighton.  The day before the final cook-off for the title, a devasting fire ripped through his parent’s property and business leaving them homeless.

Determined to still to be among the six finalists in the cook-off, which took place at the end of last year, the twenty-four year old chef ‘wowed’ the judges of The Young Chef category of The Sussex Food and Drinks Awards with a show-stopping three-course menu to confirm his title on Thursday night (31.01.13) as Sussex’s Young Chef of the Year.

Jimmy demonstrated a focused mind, keen skills and culinary innovation in producing his winning dishes which comprised a starter of butter-poached lobster followed by a main course of Sussex mallard, the ingredients for which were all produced within a five-mile radius of Borde Hill.

Passion for food runs through Jimmy’s veins, having worked from the tender age of twelve in his parent’s business, running the catering on the Bluebell Railway. Whilst gaining experience in various restaurants, Jimmy did day-release at Westminster College for three years and gained his level-3 professional cookery qualification. “My inspiration comes from the quality of Sussex produce, be it the amazing local game, crabs and lobster from Selsey, or freshly picked organic vegetables grown three miles from the restaurant,” adds Jimmy.

Jimmy was overwhelmed at winning and was extremely proud to pick up the coveted crown in front of his parents and colleagues.

Jeremy Ashpool, chef proprietor of Jeremy’s is delighted his young chef has achieved the recognition he believes he truly deserves, “Jimmy's flair for presentation and clever use of balanced ingredients is exceptional.  He understands classic cookery and uses clever modern twists. His talents have gone from strength to strength during his time with us.”

Renowned as the Sussex foodie awards, The Sussex Food and Drink Awards were hosted this year by Olympian patron Sally Gunnell, OBE.
