Local Dunning Family Wins National Farming and Business Award

The Royal Agricultural Society of England has announced The Dunning Family as the winners of their national award for The Excellence in Practical Farming & Business Award 2012.  The Dunning Family business Westmorland Ltd, grew out of the family farm 40 years ago, when the M6 was built through their farm land at Tebay. Today it consists of Tebay services north and southbound with award winning farm shops, The Westmorland Hotel and Caravan Park at Tebay north, J38 truckstop and the Rheged visitor and conference centre and it employs over 500 people. Now in its second generation, the Dunning family business will open a second motorway services in Gloucester in 2014.

Over the last 40 years, Westmorland Ltd and its businesses have remained true to its values which include a commitment to serving home made food, using local and seasonal ingredients, supporting Cumbrian and artisan food producers who supply the farm shops, as well as inspiring weary travellers stopping at Tebay services about Cumbria - its landscape, heritage and local talent.

In order to deliver and evolve its food story, Westmorland has developed a strong team of butchers, bakers, chefs, food development experts and a farm shop buyer. A strong partnership has also been established with the family farm to ensure high quality lamb and beef is supplied for use in the Westmorland businesses, every week, all year round.

Catherine Stuart from the Royal Agricultural Society of England commented "The judges were particularly impressed with the farm's ability to tailor the output to meet the daily needs of the catering and butchery side of the business. The Dunning Family have shown a huge amount of diversification in this business as well as fantastic maintenance of the landscape, stewardship of the country side and the obvious care and attention shown through improved natural habitats/ woodland, including within the grounds of Tebay services itself. All of the above have allowed the business to be extremely successful. "
